Privacy Policy.

In short

  • We collect what you send in a brief: your objectives, your challenge and goals, your name, your email, and your company if you add it.
  • We use it to reply to you and to discuss possible work. Nothing else without asking you first.
  • If no project follows, we delete it after 24 months.
  • We never sell it. Google Analytics runs only if you accept analytics cookies, and Google’s advertising features are turned off.
  • You can ask to see, correct, or delete your information at any time at magic@8unicorns.com.

Who we are

8Unicorns is a marketing agency based in Ontario, Canada. This policy explains how we handle personal information collected through 8unicorns.com and through emails you send us. We follow Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

The person accountable for personal information at 8Unicorns can be reached at magic@8unicorns.com.

What we collect

When you send a brief

  • the objectives you select
  • your description of the core challenge and of what success looks like
  • your name and email address
  • your company name, if you add it

Please don’t include sensitive personal information in a brief, or business details you aren’t allowed to share.

When you email us

Your email address and anything you choose to include in your message.

When you visit the site

Our host, Netlify, automatically processes the technical information needed to deliver the site and keep it secure, such as your IP address, your browser type, the page requested, and the time of the request. We don’t use this information to identify you.

If you accept analytics cookies

Google Analytics records how you use the site: the pages you view and for how long, the site or link that brought you here, your device, browser, and screen size, your approximate location (country and city) worked out from your IP address, and whether you sent a brief, but never what the brief said. Google Analytics doesn’t store IP addresses.

Cookies and tracking

When you first visit, a banner asks whether we may use Google Analytics cookies. Google Analytics runs only if you choose Accept. If you choose Decline, or make no choice, it doesn’t load and no analytics cookies are set.

If you accept, Google Analytics sets two first-party cookies, each lasting up to 2 years:

  • _ga, which tells one visitor apart from another
  • _ga_CS57S0P2LF, which keeps track of your visit

We’ve turned off Google’s advertising features, including Google signals and ad personalization, so this data isn’t used for advertising. We look at it only as combined statistics, such as how many people visited and which pages they read, and don’t use it to identify you. We don’t use advertising pixels or any other tracking.

The site remembers your choice in your browser’s local storage, so it doesn’t ask on every page, and asks again after 12 months. You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. If you withdraw your consent, Google Analytics stops and its cookies are removed.

The site’s typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, so when a page loads, your browser sends your IP address and browser details to Google. Google’s privacy policy applies to that information.

How we use your information

We use it to:

  • read and reply to your brief
  • discuss, plan, and propose possible work with you
  • keep a record of our conversation
  • run the site and protect it against spam and abuse
  • understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it, if you accept analytics cookies

We won’t use your information for any other purpose, such as marketing emails, without asking you first.

Who we share it with

We never sell, rent, or trade personal information. We share it only with the service providers that help us run the site and our business, and only as much as they need:

  • Netlify, Inc., which hosts the site and receives and stores brief submissions for us
  • our email provider, which delivers briefs and our replies
  • Google, which serves the site’s fonts and, if you accept analytics cookies, provides Google Analytics

We may also disclose information when the law requires it, for example in response to a valid court order.

Where it’s stored

Our service providers may store and process information in the United States and in other countries outside Canada. While it is there, it is subject to the laws of those countries and may be accessible to their courts, law enforcement, and national security authorities.

How long we keep it

If a brief doesn’t lead to a project, we keep it and our related emails for up to 24 months after our last contact with you, then delete them.

If you become a client, we keep your information while we work together, and afterwards only as long as we need it for legal, tax, and accounting purposes.

If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics keeps the detailed data about visits for 14 months, after which only combined reports remain.

Netlify keeps its technical server logs for a limited period under its own policies.

How we protect it

The site is served only over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and access to briefs is limited to the people at 8Unicorns who need it to respond. No way of sending or storing information is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect yours.

Your rights

You can ask us at any time to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you and how we use it
  • give you a copy of it
  • correct anything that is inaccurate or incomplete
  • delete it
  • stop using it, by withdrawing your consent

Email magic@8unicorns.com. We will reply within 30 days, and we may need to confirm your identity first. If you live outside Canada, your local laws may give you further rights; tell us where you are and we will help.

If you’re not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Children

This site is meant for businesses and is not directed at children. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16.
